Define the service target

Turn the intended service into measurable throughput, latency, availability, recovery and growth requirements.

Engineering scope. Fixed terrestrial point-to-point RF links. Educational planning material only; it does not replace a site survey, equipment documentation, spectrum authorisation, electrical design, or competent safety review.
Learning outcome

The decision you should be able to make

Write acceptance criteria before path and equipment choices make them expensive to change.

Core engineering

State required one-way and aggregate throughput separately. A radio PHY rate is not user throughput and cannot be used as an acceptance value without protocol and traffic assumptions.

Define latency, jitter and loss under representative offered load, not only on an idle link. State packet size, direction, duration and measurement point.

Availability is a time probability tied to an observation period and failure definition. Distinguish propagation unavailability from power, backhaul, hardware and maintenance outages.

Equipment and field checks

  • Check Ethernet port rate, duplex architecture, channel width, supported modulation set and licensing features.
  • Confirm environmental range, power budget, management access and replacement availability.
  • Reserve capacity for management traffic, retransmissions and credible growth rather than treating peak lab throughput as committed capacity.
Pass gate

Do not progress until

The requirement sheet states traffic profile, busy-hour target, maximum acceptable outage, test method and pass threshold.

Limits and cautions

  • Availability targets do not map to one universal fade-margin value; propagation model, path, frequency, climate, diversity and equipment all matter.
