ADS-B Feeder Kit: Ethernet-First Setup Guide

A pre-beta setup and troubleshooting guide for the planned Ethernet-first ADS-B feeder configuration.

Pre-beta guide. Verify this route against the final shipped hardware, current PiAware documentation and the customer’s chosen network terms.

This guide covers the planned Ethernet-first launch configuration. It deliberately avoids unproven claims about custom portals, status lights or automatic multi-network feeding.

Before you start

Check the documented parts for your product revision: feeder unit, installed stock PiAware card, compatible 1090 MHz receiver, indoor antenna, approved power supply, Ethernet cable, quick-start information and matching serial label.

1. Attach the antenna

Connect the indoor antenna gently. Do not cross-thread or overtighten the connector. Keep it vertical, high and close to a clear window where practical. Avoid metal objects, foil-backed insulation and heavily screened rooms.

2. Connect Ethernet

Connect the feeder to an available router or network-switch port. Ethernet is the supported launch route because it avoids many first-boot Wi-Fi problems.

3. Connect power

Use the supplied official or approved power adapter. Allow several minutes for the first boot. Unsuitable power supplies can create undervoltage, unstable USB operation and intermittent faults.

4. Claim the feeder

Use the official PiAware claim process with your own FlightAware account. The feeder must be supplied unclaimed. The Hardware Ledger is independent; compatibility does not imply endorsement.

5. Confirm reception

Allow time for local traffic to appear. Record the initial position and result before making changes. Reception varies with traffic, antenna placement, terrain, buildings and line of sight.

Troubleshooting

No power

  1. Confirm the approved adapter is connected.
  2. Check the wall socket.
  3. Inspect for visible damage.
  4. Contact support with the serial number if unresolved.

No network

  1. Reseat both Ethernet plugs.
  2. Try a known-good cable or router port.
  3. Check the router’s connected-device list.
  4. Perform one controlled restart.

Few or no aircraft

  1. Allow boot and local traffic time.
  2. Move the antenna higher and nearer a clear window.
  3. Keep it vertical.
  4. Move it away from metalwork and foil-backed insulation.
  5. Compare results at different times.

Safety, privacy and lawful use

  • The intended product is receive-only. Do not modify it to transmit.
  • Use only supplied or approved power equipment.
  • Do not place indoor components outdoors.
  • Do not install antennas near overhead power lines or where ladder/roof access creates unmanaged risk.
  • The owner is responsible for lawful use and network terms.
  • A network may associate feeder data with an installation location; review its privacy information before claiming.
